Pharmacodynamicists put antibiotics into two broad categories—they’re concentration-dependent and time-dependent  antibiotics. Concentration-dependent antibiotics are a class of antimicrobial drugs whose effectiveness is directly tied to their concentration in the body.  The higher the peak concentration of the antibiotic, the more rapidly and effectively it kills bacteria. For these drugs, achieving a high peak concentration is more crucial for a successful outcome than maintaining a concentration above the minimum inhibitory concentration ( MIC ) over time. Aminoglycosides (gentamicin) and fluoroquinolones (ciprofloxacin) are examples of concentration-dependent antibiotics.
